NORTH MAIN GALLERY EXHIBITION: “NEW WORK”
June 12 through July 31, 2010
Craig Barnes, George Hofmann, and Michael L Williams
North Main Gallery, Salem, New York presents the work of painters Craig
Barnes and George Hofmann, and digital media artist Michael L Williams.
The exhibition runs June 12 through July 31, 2010.
Barnes lives in Salem and with his wife Mary owns Slate Hill Daylily Farm
where they grow and crossbreed flowers in unique colors and shapes.
Together they run the farm in the summer and Craig spends the winters
painting. His work has been exhibited in New York City, Boston, and
Washington County (NY), and is part of many private, corporate and public
collections. A graduate of Massachusetts College of Art, Barnes received
his MFA in 1969 from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan.
Hofmann of Albany (NY) has exhibited regionally and in New York City. His
paintings are in several private collections, including the Albany
Institute of History and Art, Boston Public Library, Plattsburgh (NY) Art
Museum and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He taught art at Hunter College
(NYC) for many years. David Brickman of the blog Get Visual said:
Hofmann is one of those under recognized local treasures who quietly go
about his business while we do the same—the difference being that his
business involves
making world-class paintings, while ours is somewhat less glorious. After
a long career in education, Hofmann retired a few years ago and now, in
his 70s and able to devote his time fully to painting, has hit his stride.
Williams is a digital media artist based in Dorset (VT). He studied
painting, drawing and sculpture at the Corcoran School of Fine Art,
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and St. Martin’s School of Art (London).
After London, Michael taught sculpture as a teaching assistant at
Bennington College, and later worked as a studio assistant to legendary
color-field painter Kenneth Noland (http://www.kennethnoland.com). While
working with Noland, Williams returned to painting and drawing. In the
mid-nineties he began working with computer software to create images
leading to a new language for his art and new work.
